  1. How do users create a portfolio?

Most students entering their first-year, starting in Fall 2015, had a Learning Portfolio created for them in the template required by their home college or school, using your New School NetID, like this: portfolio.newschool.edu/stude123

To log into your pre-made learning portfolio for the first time:

  • The link to the learning portfolio is through MyNewSchool. As with Gmail and Canvas, click the three lines on the top right of the screen and the applications available to you will appear.
  • Click on “Learning Portfolio” on the application menu in MyNewSchool.
  • The Welcome to the New School Learning Portfolio! page will open.
  • Click on “Login Here” at top right of the screen.
  • Your new learning portfolio will be created, and you will see the progress on the screen.
  • When the portfolio creation is complete, you will see a Dashboard screen.
  • On the Dashboard screen, click “My Sites” on the top left corner. A drop-down menu will show your Learning Portfolio site. The Learning Portfolio will temporarily be called “Your Name,” but you will change that. On the menu that appears when you mouse over your site, click on Visit Site.
  • This will bring up your Learning Portfolio. The basic portfolio has been built on a template created for your program.

To log into your pre-made learning portfolio thereafter:

  • Click on “Learning Portfolio” on the application menu in MyNewSchool.
  • On the welcome page, click on My Sites on the upper left corner of the page to log into your Learning Portfolio.

If you do not have a pre-made/existing learning portfolio, you can create one by:

  • Logging into http://portfolio.newschool.edu
  • Clicking on the orange Get A Portfolio link, using your New School NetID login and password
  • Non-degree students will be provided with login information

  1. How do I decide which template to use?

Each college and some schools have developed templates they require their students to use.

  1. How many portfolios can one person have?

Each student should have a single learning portfolio, but can use the CampusPress tool to create an unlimited number of blogs.

  1. Can this tool also be used to create blogs?

Yes. It can be used in any way a WordPress blog can be used.

  1. What form of content can be placed in a portfolio?

The portfolio has content within it and can link to/embed content hosted outside the New School’s portfolio site, including Soundcloud, Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr, and Twitter. Content developed prior to attending the university can also be developed within and through links from the portfolio, including prior-learning experiences and admissions applications. All current university policies apply to content posted in learning portfolios, including student’s Code of Conduct (http://www.newschool.edu/student-rights-and-responsibilities/), Intellectual Property Rights (http://www.newschool.edu/leadership/provost/policies/), and Fair Use (link tbd).

  1. What are the file and storage capacities?

The limit per file is 19 MB. The limit per portfolio is 10 GB. (See #6 for best practice about hosting content outside LP to conserve space)

  1. What are the privacy settings?

The creator of the site has control over privacy settings. In CampusPress, the person who creates the portfolio is the “administrator”.

Here are the privacy options for your New School learning portfolio, from most restrictive to least:

Only administrator can visit.  This means that only you can view the content in your portfolio.

Anyone that visits must first provide this password, not including registered users of this blog.  Your portfolio is password protected, so people can view your blog if they enter a password that you have provided.

Only registered users of this blog can have access – anyone found under Users>All Users can have access.  Only people you have specifically added as users can view your portfolio.

Visitors must have a login.  This is the default setting for learning portfolios. It means that anyone who is a registered user of The New School Sites can gain access. Anyone with a newschool.edu email account can view your portfolio.

Discourage search engines from indexing this site.  Your portfolio can be read by anyone with the URL, but search engines such as Google won’t be able to find it.

Allow search engines to index this site.  Your portfolio is public, so anyone can see and navigate the site and search indexes such as Google can find and catalog the site.

  1. What is the default privacy setting?

At the time the portfolio is created, only the person who created it has access to the site.

  1. How does the creator change the default privacy setting?

See tutorial.

  1. Who has access to the Learning Portfolio?

Students control privacy levels for their Learning Portfolios, but they may be required to share particular portfolio content with their instructors, as requested.

  1. Who to contact for technical support?

IT Help Desk: itservicedesk@newschool.edu / 212-229-5300 xHELP (4357)

  1. How does the portfolio tool complement Canvas?

There is a link to portfolio.newschool.edu in every Canvas class.

  1. How long does the creator have access to the New School Portfolio?

Students will have access to their New School Learning Portfolio for five years after their degree is conferred. Students who leave the university will have access for six months from their last day of class.

  15. How do I re-establish the learning portfolio if it’s been deleted accidentally?

Contact distributeded@newschool.edu for assistance.
