This week in Public Seminar, a publication of The New School for Social Research, Ryan Gustafson of the first-year writing faculty has offered his reflections on the shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub. In his essay, “Queer Reflections on a Summer of Violence: Surviving Orlando without Alibi,” Gustafson takes up the New School President David Van Zandt’s immediate response to the attack, sent by email the following day, which was criticized by many people within the community for refusing, Gustafson says, “to name the homophobic sadism that took the lives of victims” (emphasis mine). It’s important reading, and ends with his own thoughts about approaching this new school year, so go read.
