What’s mainly happening in the first-year writing classes these final two weeks of the semester is WORKSHOP. Students are gathered together around their final essays, offering insight and critique, breaking essays down and building them up. This takes bravery and self-respect. And I offer this essay, a lecture I once gave, as encouragement: “The Courage to Sound Like Ourselves.”
