Explosion in Chelsea

Earlier today, President David Van Zandt emailed the New School community summing up what’s known at the moment about the explosion on 23rd Street Saturday night. His note begins this way:

Last night, an incendiary device exploded in a dumpster on W. 23rd Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, with a second device found on W. 27th Street. Law enforcement is actively investigating the situation. While we are thankful that n​o one from our New School community was among the physically injure​d, our thoughts go out to all those who were impacted by this event.

Many of the students in our first-year classes are new to New York, and even for those who are not, in moments like this we can all benefit from knowing what others are going through, knowing that we’re not alone in this city, and knowing there are people to turn to. The Times is running a story today about the “psychological shrapnel that an explosion on a busy city street is designed to release.” In addition to reminding students of the support available through the New School (see below), I’d also invite anyone who’s interested to post reflections in the comments below.
