The first object I chose for this assignment is this photograph/sculpture piece by the artist, Alix Marie. When I look at this image, I see cut-out prints of naked body parts lazily slung over some sort of rack, almost as if it was clothing hung up to dry. The relationship that it could have to our senses is that it could somewhat be seen in a grotesque perspective, or in a relatable perspective, because as humans, we all share these body-parts.
Regarding materials, it seems that these are cut-out prints on glossy paper on metal racks, and they seem to be carefully sorted out and curated by the artist which makes the overall piece more effective. Even though this artist seems to make the piece personal, it can also be impersonal because there are no faces in this art piece, which can make it more accessible.
I like this piece because its odd. It’s something I’ve never seen before, and the artist herself is one I am inspired by and respect greatly. I personally think that grotesque pieces like this that are a little out of the ordinary can kind of catch viewers off guard, and have them look twice and make them feel a bit uncomfortable. If you look through this artists other works, there are a lot of similar pieces that have themes like grotesque and nudity, which can come hand in hand and creative a bold art style that makes people think and question it. I chose it because even though my work isn’t quite like this, it relates to certain styles like grotesque, even in the lightest ways. Viewers can interpret many ideas from this piece, for myself, I can see grotesque because I know the artist’s other works, but maybe other viewers can see aspects of naturality and comfort. I think whats inspiring about this is that its daring and abnormal and causes people to think about it, at least me. Her works can connect to loads of ideas, insecurity, uncomfortable, comfort, or angle, because I believe these kinds of works are easy to look at and connect it to your own personal life.
This next object I chose is a sculpture made by the artist David Altmedj. When I look at this sculpture, overall, I am unsure what kind of form this is. I see sculpted body-parts and hands grabbing onto each other all shaded in different pastel colours. The artist is trying to make these somewhat human forms distorted and confusing to the eye. You can feel a sense of relationship in this piece, maybe with oneself or with another. I can personally see dissociation of ones body when I look at this piece.
The sculpture seems to be made out of some sort of plaster and paint to colour it. His pieces are very well thought-out, complicated, and jaw-dropping. For example, the placing of all the extra hands could be a symbol or important message for this piece, something bigger that the artist is trying to convey through symbolism.
I like how jumbled this piece is, it shows interaction with other forms but it can also closely resemble a distorted interaction with oneself. It is another art piece that makes you stop think again. I think this could be inspiring because it expresses a non-natural and peculiar interaction with whoever the viewer wants to interpret it with. The connections this piece can make with the world can vary because many people can look at this and think a number of things. For example, maybe this piece could address the current human condition of the given environment, of ones personal life or of something much greater.
