I looked forward to each live nude drawing session besides carrying the heavy sketchpads back and forth. The reason why I looked forward to it is because I find it useful to do these kinds of drawing exercises when it comes to drawing the human form because you gain more drawing techniques (shading, proportions etc.) I think technicality was my biggest challenge throughout this process. I have a lot of issues conforming to the concept of technicality in art because I believe personally, making art helps me escape from that concept that I see in everyday life. My personal works and drawing style are very much not in touch with the concept of technicality and it is out of my comfort zone when I have to make technical work. I come from an artistic education background where there weren’t a lot of technical rules regarding my art practice, and I got to develop my own drawing style and techniques on my own over the course of my high school education. I naturally have trouble basing or referencing most of my drawings from any image or figure, because then I feel like it looks warped or doesn’t represent my accurate style which makes me hard on myself regarding my works.
Nevertheless, this experience was still benefitting me in a number of ways because although I was having trouble drawing the figure with just specific lines shadings, or proportions in the beginning, I still learned how to adapt to it better than before. Over the weeks of these sessions, even though I didn’t think it would, I noticed a slight improvement in shading, especially in my own personal drawings for my portfolio, which was helpful to notice and appreciate. This experience made me reflect on my thoughts on technicality because even though the logic of it doesn’t line up with my personal works and drawing style, I do believe it’s important in certain aspects of art, but the reason why I had trouble with it is because I don’t think so much about technicality when I draw, how the lines look, or if the figure is zoomed out more than in, I focus more if it lines up with what I want it to look like to me, and how I feel when I see it. I do see it now in a new light after this drawing experience and I feel now that it’s important to pay attention to it when making work, because it can enhance your work in a positive way if you maneuver it in the right direction.
