Community Engagement and Research

Throughout my work this year, I have been able to define what exactly community engagement is: a thought-out process with the specific purpose of working with identified groups of people that are connected by common interest, location, or identity. This semester, I was able to incorporate my work and community engagement by reaching out to the yoga community. I was able to create a challenge and go to my first yoga class after practicing for about three years, alone. My challenge was posted on Instagram and those who participated, used the hashtag: #wind_water_fire_yoga. Using the hashtag, participants were allowed to see other yoga pictures and how other people progressed through the course of two weeks.

At first, I didn’t think I used research when doing any of my projects. During Seminar and Studio, I realized I constantly used research, but in a more informal manner. When trying to find information for my yoga project, I used other famous Instagram yoga accounts, Facebook, Pinterest, and friends to discover poses, lifestyle, quotes, and what exactly attracted a group of people to follow their account. I have had my yoga account for about two years now and was able to have already gained about 900 followers and after doing research I now have over 1300. I think research is very effective during a project, whether its formal or informal. Having some information to help you prosper and go farther within your project or paper will allow you to have a more successful outcome.

My Suitcase

The concept behind my suitcase was inspired by my love for traveling. I have traveled and moved my entire life and have always had at least my mother or someone close to me to make me feel comfortable. When I moved to the city i felt that I was alone and didn’t have anything to make me feel comforted. When the suitcase project was assigned we were told to create a suitcase with things that reminded us of home or brought with us. I chose to do a trunk because suitcases usually mean a temporary stay and my trunk was to replicate that I would be staying for a while and making it into a furniture piece. I decided to portray on the outside of my trunk mini “bumper stickers” of all the places in the U.S.A which I have spent a large amount of time in. On the inside i portrayed my hometown and what makes me who I am, including makeup, sparkles, bows, perfume, friend, yoga, and the beach. On top of the inside, i chose how these pieces are allowing me to make New York City my home. I am realizing I do not necessarily need a person or family member to be with me to make a place feel like home. In life we have to invite new things into our daily routine and be exposed to newer and better and sometimes worse things.

Toulouse-Lautrec

TOULOUSE LAUTRECHenri de Toulouse-Lautrec painted and created his artwork in the way he saw his lifestyle in Paris, lifetime in the 1800s, and modern time. He was also very colorful and theatrical. I chose to portray the more modern theme of New York City. You tend to see men and women dressed up for work and hailing taxis. I also chose to add lots of color to my photo.
