Assignment #5 – TED Talks – What is Design

Objection: Learn about professionals’ views and perspectives on what design is.

TED Talks:

How do you find these talks assisting in understanding the use of 3D design?

The use of 3D design is broad and never ending. In Rawsthorn’s ted talk, she spoke of the history of design, dating back to the Chinese empire and to pirates, and how changing the design of a 3D item can literally build empires from the bottom up. This helped me to see the importance of smart design. In Behar’s talks, he spoke of the importance of 3d design in alleviating the excess effort in the human experience, making designs designed for humans, by humans. 3D design can (and should) be used to make life easier and more sustainable. It allows for a better life and makes it so that the consumers shouldn’t worry about elements that can be taken care of by designers. It also allows people who wouldn’t have access to materials to now have access to them, making the world more inclusive. in ted talk, I l learned that design can be anything from fancy chairs to the design of gas masks for all ages-babies to the elderly. I understand more now that design is a very broad field that both adds beauty and effectivity to daily life. It can also be hilarious or a political commentary, functional to furthering social justice. I understand now that

What was most surprising in each of the talks?

In Alice Rawsthorn’s ted talk, Pirates, Nurses, and other Rebel Designers, I found the most surprising aspect to be how she recalled the young leader of a small area in Asia to be a king of design in his day and age, and he then became the leader of the Chinese empire. I didn’t think of design being able to encompass such a broad scale and I was shocked at the effects of innovative design.

In Yves Béhar’s Ted Talk, Designing Objects that Tell Stories, I found the most surprising aspect to be the quote “design is never done” and how even only in one project, designing continues for long after the product itself is completed. This includes packaging, advertisement, re-designs, in-store setup, and much more.

In Paola Antonelli’s Ted Talk, Treat Design as Art, I found the most surprising aspect to be all of the different examples of design she showed during her talk. She showed examples including gas masks, earrings made of hair, hideaway shelters, rice bags made into rain jackets, to medicine injected by drawing on one’s skin.
