Reflections:
- What was the purpose of watching these TED talks?
I think that the purpose of watching these TED talks was so that we could see the intersection of art and the human body in ways that we haven’t seen before. To show how art and design can affect one’s life and what it’s like to be ‘different’, and how that is an empowering thing that allows for new art forms to be created.
- What is common to all these three talks?
All of these TED talks had commonalities: they intersected the human body, art, and science. They all created new art forms that used the human body, transforming the body into something that wouldn’t have been able to exist beforehand.
- What did you learn from each talk?
- I learned that the human body has so many artistic capabilities that I had never thought of before. I didn’t know prior to that so much could be done, for example using the human body to showcase evolution, change the fragrance of sweat, and the way that we as humans view one another.
- I learned that although something that is a disability doesn’t mean it has to limit one’s scope of abilities. With the help of science and design, it can create new abilities that didn’t even exist prior to.
- I learned that replacement limbs can be both functional and artistic. The team was able to combine health science and art in a way that I had never seen before. I didn’t know that replacement limbs could function in such a beautiful way.
- What was surprising in each talk?
- I was surprised by the swallowable perfume that affects the fragrance of one’s perspiration and how that was even possible. I wondered how it affected someone’s life and if it had any long term effects.
- I was surprised by the extent that he was able to go to with the hearing chip inserted in his head, I didn’t even consider how far he could go with it: putting colors to songs and matching sounds in the world to his ‘favorite’ colors.
- I was surprised by her gracious resilience to everything that she went through and how she spoke of her circumstances with such a positive tone. She was very inspiring and I loved everything she was doing.
