Objective:
Learn how to apply several plane concepts and the principles and elements of 3-D design to creating foam board or Cardboard – 3D form using additive and subtractive methods and adding texture to a surface (plane).
Research:
Donald Judd:
I’ve seen both of these pieces in St. Louis and didn’t know they were by him, which is really cool.
Anthony Caro:
I am really inspired by his artwork, I think it’s really cool and different, and I like how he uses organic shapes in a way that is stable and still looks like it has rhythm to it.
Charles Ginnever:
This piece is also located in St. Louis in the Laumeier Sculpture Park, which I have visited countless times. I really like this piece in how it looks like a piece of paper folded and sliced, almost like the pieces we have made in class.
David Smith:
This is so cool and I love the idea of making organic folded shapes look like other figures.
I really liked going through these artists’ work and seeing how they used similar materials to interact with the space around them, and how each one used similar techniques but resulted in completely varying outcomes. I also really enjoyed finding artwork that I had viewed prior in my hometown, it added a personal connection and made the pieces a lot more meaningful to me.
Part 2:
This assignment was extremely challenging at first, but as I warmed up to the idea of making sculptures using paper, I felt it get easier to make designs I was proud of. I enjoyed the difference between the cuts made with the knife and the end product-and how different patterns of cuts would result in different outcomes.

Reflection:
What was challenging?
I found the actual building of the structure itself to be challenging. I really enjoyed conceptualizing my design and finding elements that I knew would work together, but I struggled in putting the pieces together and knowing where to connect them. I’ve never used the method of joining planes before and I struggled to make cutouts that were the right size. I have been working with wood a lot recently and have been used to the exact-ness of it, so transitioning to cardboard was hard. I wanted to have my design be cleaner and for the pieces to have a rhythm to them, but I found it to be harder than expected to do this with cardboard instead of wood.
How does this assignment enhance your understanding of some of the 3D design elements and principles?
This assignment enhanced my understanding of the design element of fluidity and abstractness. I wasn’t as comfortable beforehand making fluid pieces out of rigid structures, and only really understood how to create flexible pieces with flexible materials. This assignment allowed me to understand further how to manufacture fluidity.
How are you planning to use some of the insights in Project #2?
I am planning on working further with planar connections in Project #2 and if I need to have any fluid parts in my piece I will bring in my knowledge from this assignment.
