I created this dress as an attempt to show appreciation for my father and the strong bonds my family has because of actions that happened many years ago: reading to my sister and I as children. Every night before we went to sleep he would sit down with us on our respective beds and read out loud. He would read us a mix of his favorite childhood books and exciting new fantasy novels. The characters came alive through his voice and its ability to imitate accents and tones. We would wait all day for it to be the hour before bedtime, to experience the love and comfort brought through books read by our father. Our “Da”. The books included in this dress are ones that were read to my sister and I, including some of my da’s childhood favorites: The Tales of Beetle the Bard (Harry Potter), Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Nancy Drew, and Winnie the Pooh. It excited me to tear the pages out of the novel while creating the dress because of the fun memories each page brought me. I would get distracted from making the dress due to reading the books. Although there were struggles due to using a sewing machine for the first time in many years, I really enjoyed this project and the loving memories that it brought back.
