Assignment #14 – Scale up 3D Object

Objectives:

Introduction to scaling up a 3D object.
Making a large-scaled-up object using rigid or soft plane materials.
Practicing using plane materials to create 3D forms.

Part 1:

Part 2:

I started by going to a thrift store to find green fabric that would act as a base for my project. I spent $8 on a cardigan (an outrageous price for a practically sheer Target cardigan).

I then traced the outline onto paper which I then cut out and used to trace the sides onto the fabric.

Then I began to sew! I sewed everything together except for the entirety of the base because I needed to flip it inside out when I completed my stitches. I completed the design and flipped it, then I stuffed it with the rest of the cardigan. I sewed it closed, then I created the ‘hands’, stuffing them with filling then adding them on. I then traced the facial features to complete the design.

(I was sick throughout the process of making this and so I did not take in progress pictures).

Reflection:

I have only done one building-based hand-sewing project before and it was two years ago, so I was a little nervous to start this project and what completing it would involve. I was very indecisive about what to scale up because I wanted to make a stuffed animal of one of the small figures in my room, and they were all extremely complex for my sewing skill. I ended up choosing half of a figure from my windowsill that was complex enough to challenge me, but not too hard that I wouldn’t be able to complete it how I wished. At first I struggled in figuring out how to connect the pieces of fabric and so the bottom is sewed differently than I wish it was. It took me a little to get the hang of sewing, but once I did, I really enjoyed working with the materials and creating something so dear to me. I’m really happy with how it turned out despite its flaws, and it definitely helped me feel more confident in my sewing skills for the future.
