Inspiration
I originally took a trip through the East Village to find a place to base my piece off of:
These places were all super cute and historical, but I didn’t have any connection to them. I wanted to pick something that I loved! So, I thought back to my past and my trip to Michigan in July.
The building I chose to base my ceramic house on is the “Cottswold Cottage”, a historical building made in England in the 1600s, but brought over to Dearborn Michigan in the 1900s. The Henry Ford, a historical site, houses it and allows for visitors to take a trip to the 1600s. I traveled here every summer and have many beautiful memories here, so I wanted to devote my piece to this place.
I always start my projects by finding inspiration from other artists, so I found some ceramic works that I loved the style of:
Sketches
I don’t have any images of my sketches! Eek!

I wanted to make the piece look handmade, with somewhat uneven clay throughout it. The building itself is very old and all of the cobblestones were handmade, so I didn’t want the piece to lose that aspect. The holes are all different sizes, and the top kind of caves in, but it’s homey. The light filters through the piece in a way that reminds me of my home in Missouri, and the light will filter out of it in a similar way. I would’ve done some parts of it slightly differently, like the front windows and the top window area, but in all I’m pretty happy with it. I want to add some illustrations and a clear/white glaze over it when the time comes!
