Prompt:
With a strong emphasis on the conceptual relationship between material and method, form and subject,
students will create an artwork that will differ in media and surface. Random selections of invented non-
traditional materials will be chosen out of a grab bag as a launching point (the supplementary choice of
materials and surface can be added as necessary to strengthen the idea). After a material is selected
students choose a location and/or object(s) from politics, history, pop culture to render and in turn create
new meaning through irony, metaphor, poetics, commentary, critique or symbolism.
Concept:
The material chosen for me was organic materials, meaning I could use anything from leaves to molten lava rock. I decided to use wood and wool so that I could carve from wood and use the wool to felt with. I didn’t know what iconic image I wanted to depict, but I knew I wanted to create a frame out of wood. All year I’ve been inspired by the idea of creating beautiful pieces inspired by lesbianism (as one myself), so I chose to do that, which led me to research old images of lesbian couples. I wanted to make the couple look beautiful and peaceful, depicting them in a way that is easy to love and to find the beauty in. Making them out of organic/natural materials reflects the idea that lesbianism is natural and beautiful.
Inspiration/Research:
I chose to use the third image as my iconic inspiration. It’s a painting by Pierre-Auguste Cot named Le Printemps (Springtime). From what I can tell, it’s a painting of a couple, beautifully depicted on a swing within nature. I decided to recreate it with two women, to put them within the seemingly magical landscape.
