ASSIGNMENT #15–Design – TED talks- reflection

1.      How can ‘disruptive design’ enrich sustainable packaging innovation? by Leyla Acaroglu

I like the presenter Leyla, a sustainability strategist’s interesting idea. She says that it is a lot more complicated than choosing a paper bag than a plastic bag. Leila urges that people need to stop obsessing over the “green” we stick on and expand our minds to design systems and products that relieve the pressure on the planet. We can not see how it appears more environmental protection to choose the product, we need to dig into it to find which way is more useful and effective for the environment.

2.      Ergonomics and Design

Mark Emend said that ergonomics is a branch of anthropometrics. I think ergonomics is a big part of the design, if you can not make your design that fits enough for people to wear it or use it, it can not be called it a good design. And also I think for the chair design for our last project I also need to add more ergonomics in the design to make the design works out.

3.      By the People: Designing a Better America (you can skip some of the talks. Just try to get a grasp on the subject of this symposium).

Cynthia Smith points out that America is facing a growing challenge from the poverty- record levels; suburbs-1 out of 10 are poor; urban- shrinking post-industrial cities; rural- youth migration; climate- flood and drought. Smith’s field research shows that what is the real things the poor region’s people need, so she actually design the things for what people need. Her design is in search of collaborative designs for more equitable, inclusive and sustainable communities.
