Project#1 Personal symbol

Assignment Description

During the first 5 weeks, students will develop a 3D personal symbol (Objects or materials that represent your personality or interests, a “portrait” personal logo like) inspired by using rigid linear materials for a structure such as metal wire, wood dowels, metal and or plastic rods. Flexible linear materials as connectors, such as rope, rubber bands, thread, etc. This symbol can be inspired by how you identify yourselves and how the communities you belong to (“the world”) observe you. Creating a personal symbol can be a great way to remind ourselves of what we stand for, our goals, dreams, and stuff that is important to us.

Phase 1:

List (1) ways of how you identify yourself:

Free, Desire of control, Sad, thrift

List (2) of how your environment – community/s sees you

Fussy, Open-minded, Happy, saponaceous

Research:

The symbol is one of the basic concepts of life. Symbols generally refer to words, languages, codes, mathematical symbols, chemical symbols, traffic signs… However, in semiotics, the range of symbols is much broader. In social life, such as greeting movements, rituals, games, literature, art, mythology, and other elements are all symbols. So, symbols can be used as a representative of something. The symbol is used by people to refer to certain objects, it can include in any form through the sense to show the meaning of all appearance. In this appearance, symbols that can be felt is the embodiment of the object and its meaning. For example, “=” is the equivalent symbol in mathematics. On one hand, it is the carrier of meaning and the manifestation of spirit externalization, on the other hand, it has objective forms that can be perceived. The constructional function of signs is to establish a connection between perceptual signs and their meanings and to present this connection in our consciousness.

Design Proposal:

In this project, we need to find out our personal symbol. We need to find a symbol that represents ourselves. It is hard to define an object as a symbol with the object’s original intention, let alone to use a symbol to define myself. I would like to give myself some representative words to make up my own symbol.  I was reminded that I’m a really casual person, but sometimes I have a little bit of desire to control. So, I might have an “obsessive-compulsive disorder” but not a real obsessive-compulsive disorder. The “obsessive-compulsive disorder” I mean here is that I need to place everything in the place I would like to put, and if someone put the things in the wrong place, no matter how organized it is, or how beautiful it looks, I will always put it back to the initial place I put. And also I’m a really open-minded girl who would like to accept different kinds of people. I try to learn good things from each of them, and I try to ignore the bad things from them. Although I’m a really open-minded girl, I still have a list of things I could not do, like doing something transgress morality. And I am also a lively girl, who is really talkative and nice. So my symbol needs to represent happy, regularly and open-minded. I would like to combine the development of happy symbols and regularly and open-minded into my personal symbol.

1. Include all I said before, I think I am a very contradictory people. I am really open-minded, but I refuse to change, I am really happy but I have to make everything to make myself happy. And my education culture is also really odd, I ‘m from a really traditional family, but I study in LA for my middle school and high school. Contradictory means very mutually opposed or inconsistent. So the first thing I thought of is a lock and key. And the most contradictory thing for me is although I have the key of the lock I still can not unlock the locker. So I decided to used the key and lock as my elements in my project.

2.I’m gonna make a sphere with PVC or wire, and there is a tree get out of it.

Phase 2:

Sketch 9 motives and elements from your inspiration research about your “personal symbol” in each box print out the grid template or create one yourself).

Select the 6 best motives

  1. Combine the motives together and see what we could come up with- the total of 6 combined motives
  2. Name each drawing based on the motive theme- literal, emotional, sensation, etc.

Combine the motives together and see what we could come up with- a total of 3 combined motives.

  1. Effectively communicate concepts using points and lines
  2. The new configuration would be used in your future projects

Design concept selection, sketches, and 3D modeling.

3D & Sketch Models:

Phase 3:

Combining these two symbols into one cohesive new design of the symbol. Prepare drawing versions of the new design. Develop a 3D final linear model.

Reflection:

This project is making a 3D personal symbol, and according to myself identifying and friends identifying, I decided to make a project that uses the circle as the main elements. At first, I want to make my personal project as a sphere with PVC or wire, and there is a tree growing out of the sphere. It means that when I go out of my country, my own community, and see a lot of different people my heart is growing out of the original perceive.

While I’m making the 3D model, I’m stuck on how to make a sphere with a linear material, so I change my idea. Instead of making a sphere, I decided to continuously use my previous main element-circle, to make a chocker that my heart that means beauty but also a constraint. The chocker is the tradition and the education I get from my parents and culture, and the circles around the chocker are the different types of people I touched when I get own my perspective of what is wrong and what is right.

But for my final piece of the project, I decided to combine the first idea I got from the brainstorming and the second ideas I get from my 3D modeling. I use different sizes of chokers to make a globular with mire. And its shape is more like a porcelain piece than a sphere. I combine the different sizes of chockers to create a globular, it expends me a long time to make each circle by hand, but I still decide to make them by hand. Its texture is rough but still bright. It is the same with me that although experience a lot and becomes saponaceous, but always stays true to the original self. And the jar like personal symbols also means that the more I see the more I can save and preserve.
