Experience & Meaning

In “The Stranger,” Schütz describes the ways in which people become familiar with new places and communities. I have personally gone through this disorienting experience, and during that process, I didn’t have any guide lines or clear instructions to help me get through it. Learning to enjoy being alone was extremely hard, but with time, it became the most helpful skill in adapting to my new culture. As a sociological institution, my high school was another key factor in getting me socialized. Even though I didn’t really fit in at first, I progressively made friends over the years, and eventually found my clique. It was this ‘recipe’ of branching out of my comfort zone that allowed me to comfortably adapt into my new community.
