Reflection:

Looking back at the process of creating this dress from an idea, I am really impressed by how much I have learned. I can still remember when I couldn’t even sew along the line, and now, I can do some difficult sewing like the collar, armhole, and zipper. I’ve also learned so many such as making sleeves, manipulating darts, making a collar, making cuff and lining. Now, looking at the dress I made, and can actually wear, is when I suddenly realized all this.

Not only did I learned through the classroom, there are also so many things that I learned when I was making garments with my friends. We meet at school every Sunday at 12:00 p.m. to do our homework together so we can help each other. Through this process, we create a bond between and learn from each other. The most importantly, when we go shopping in the fashion district, there are somethings we learned and can be useful for our entire life as a designer. We learned how to find cheap and high-quality fabrics by looking at the store’s decoration. We know how to accumulate and share nice stores so it benefits us all. We even share fabrics so we can save the most money.

From the critique which we did last week and by looking at other students’ work, there are more things to know without learning it the hard way. I never thought about fabric shredding can be such a big issue during sewing because personally, I haven’t encountered any fabric like that. So next time, when I shop for fabric, I would pay attention to this aspect. Even if the fabric really shreds, I have learned ways to deal with shredding such as using interfacing or use a serger. All of those are really helpful for me in the future.

If I would remake this dress, I will be more careful on patterning, especially lining because inaccurate pattern could lead to pain during sewing. I would also make this dress a little bit slimmer because now I know my upper body is slimmer than a size 6 model. The armhole needs to be sewed more careful as well. But personally, I am happy with how this dress come out as a new sewer first time making an actual garment.

In conclusion, I have really learned a lot and I am really thankful of my professor Genevieve.  Thank you for really make use of the class and teach us as much as you can during class. Even though it might be tiring sometimes, but all the things we learned is precious for our future.
