Community Gardens Reflection

After visiting MORUS, I really was inspired. I felt a real sense of community even if I didn’t see the people who are part of the organization. The museum is really cool and I enjoyed the video a lot. I went to a really small high school that is extremely environmentally friendly. I could feel the same passion for the environment within the community at the museum and gardens that was at my high school. I was really surprised when the man speaking said that there is a huge amount of punk people who make up a big part of the volunteers.

As for the community gardens I really liked them. I pass gardens and parks all the time however I never knew that there was so many community gardens where people grow their own food. I think that growing your own food is really healthy and great because you’re in control and know for a fact that there are no added chemicals and its all organic. I loved the first garden that we went to because it had so many little pockets of interesting things. I loved the little pond surrounded by rocks. I found it really cute and it’s not really something that you see often in a city. The whole garden was kind of like a piece of land that wasn’t New York City at all. I kinda felt like I was in a different world. Everything was so organic and natural it was really cool being there.

My favorite part of the whole park was the area where people did their composting. New York City is such a health crazed city as so many people are becoming vegan and working out is getting more and more popular. Composting is such an important part of making the world healthy and doing something positive with the leftover food. I was shocked when he said that all of the soil in the park was from composted food. I’m so glad I learned more about the community gardens and hope to visit them again when it gets a little bit warmer outside.
