Kombucha and GrowBio Lab Reports

Kombucha Lab:

Overall I thought that this lab was extremely successful without any complications. After placing the kombucha inside the container all I had to do was wait. I placed the container under my sink and would check on it every day. For the first few days, it didn’t look like it was growing. After about 5 days this thin white film started to form. About 2 weeks of growing a thick sheet of leather formed and floated at the top of the container. I took it out of the container and it was really slimy and had a lot of texture. After thoroughly washing the leather I put it on wood to dry. A few days later it turned transparent and all of the bumps flattened. I thought the end product was interesting because the bubbles left an interesting natural pattern. For my final project I tried cutting a square of the leather to make a crane but it was too thin and broke very easily.

GrowBio project:

This project was for sure not as successful as the kombucha one. I placed the bag of woodchips next to my radiator in my room and let it sit and grow. For the first few days, it started forming a white mold which was how it was supposed to turn out. About a week later I noticed that it started to grow some green moss or mold. At this point, I really didn’t know if the green substance was and if it was supposed to be growing in the bag. After speaking to Oliver I realized that this was not a good sign. Somehow the water or mulch was infected with some type of bacteria.
