Reflection on John Zorn’s “Khebar”

John Zorn’s performance of “Khebar” models the concept of balance and teamwork. All six musicians on stage play an essential role and contribute a unique sound to the song. Although I am not the most knowledgeable of the jazz genre, what I have noticed and love about jazz songs like “Khebar” is the balance of each sound. There is theme tune that the ensemble plays and returns to throughout the piece where all instruments are highlighted. Between those recurring parts, one instrument will perform a solo and then seconds later another instrument will take the lead and perform their short solo. It’s all very exciting and conversational. Each sound in the ensemble is represented and comes through with it’s unique flare while also working cohesively.
