Objective
Bring movies to places with no access to cinema in Perú, by creating a portable, off-the-grid solar projector.
Problems
Perú, as a third world country, has many locations without access to the movies. In fact, there’s only 77 movie theaters in Perú, a country with around 30 million people. And, 60% of movie theaters are in the capital. From this you can tell movies are a privilege in Perú, and it shouldn’t be that way.
Another problem is related to energy consumption. Movie theaters are one of the most energy-demanding/ consuming places you can find in a city, and all of the energy they use comes from the grid, which is mostly powered by fossil fuels.
Solution
A small, community-oriented solar-powered projector is my solution. This is a design that is easy to carry and needs no external installation to make it work other than a wall. The electricity to project this images comes from a battery that is connected into a small solar panel, which also serves as top of the device. The idea is that the device is placed under the sun all day, so that during the evening the community can gather and watch the amazing movies that come preloaded inside the device.
Prototyping
This is just so awesome Harry– in every way: conceptually, technically, compassionately, aesthetically, humorously. Thank you very much for making this initiative! I sincerely hope that your project goes forward to become a reality. And many thanks for being in our class! (Will you come back in the fall?! :-)) ML
