The New Earth Reader

This work explores a normal phenomenon in reading. I often found myself lost while reading books. Even though I am reading, I am not comprehending the message of it. This kind of reading disability happens in the modern society. In the world where it has been heavily devoured by technologies, young generations are often distracted by television, cell phones, and instagram. Through discovering this, I chose traditional print book to represent the standard in reading, and devised it into hallowed book to convey the emptiness of merely looking at books. There is a Chinese old saying, “A book holds a house of gold”, which I am unable to relate to it, so I shredded out the texts and mingled all together into a block. My project is designed to have people understand in a place of who are unable to focus on books.

First, I soaked the shredded paper with water and glue overnight.

Then make a rectangle shape engraved foam-model, put the paper overnight.

The paper is still wet, so thirdly, I break the wet block into pieces and dry it with hair blower.

While glueing piece by piece in the book, I also added burned paper and cut paper.
