Respond of Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms

Christopher Breward’s fashion aphorisms in the foreword of Fashion Studios—Research Methods, Sites and Practices, reflect methodologies on fashion. “Fashion is made manifest in material forms. It demands study in the same way that ancient artifacts are made meaningful by archaeologists: through careful excavation. ” I agree to this statement because fashion is an artifact that shows the physical manipulations of body. It comes into existence because of human. What do archaeologists do? They study prehistoric human and cultures. Since culture is not far away from humanity, as an artifact, fashion, a form of art, that humans participate in daily life is an fundamental part of human history. It requires research and professional study because it is a reflection yet extension of human lives and society. This reminds another statement in Breward’s forwword: “Fashion moves in space and time. It shared in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.” Fashion is a melting pot, it changes and stirs up quickly. People always use this platform to express themselves, either extraordinary or normal. Things can be mixed when there’s a difference, because cultures are inter-connective. On the other hand, fashion is a wearable art that shows innovations in techniques and changing in styles. For instance, abnormal garment constructions are genius inventions because the more extraordinary clothing, the harder to construct. It requires the science- mathematics and physics. Yes, everything has something in common. You don’t have to necessarily agree with me but art and science, they are more similar than different because both are explained from the world around us. Fashion, for me is like a collision of art and science, it is embedded into our everyday lives and an essential elements to forecast future.
