Space/Materiality – Abstract Cube

I chose my cube for this LP post because this project was probably one of the most challenging assignments so far. The criteria was to define a 10 x 10 x 10 inch cube in an abstract cube, in other words, create something unique and unusual using wood. From the look of it, it does not look complicated at all; in fact, it looks pretty simple and easy. However, this is the project I spent the most time, energy and experimentation on. I made 3 10 x 10 x 1 inch H’s, and created 14 1 x 1 x 1 inch small cubes to connect the sides together. I put 4 -4 cubes diagonally at the bottom, and 3 -3 cubes on the top the same way to make 10 inch sides. All elements were secured with wood glue which sounds easy, but was actually quite tricky. The process was surprisingly long and challenging because I did not expect to redo many parts. I would say the most challenging part was to make the small cubes because basically all the balance and measurements were relying on the 1 x 1 x 1 inch cubes. I had to recut so many small cubes to make the whole thing stable and flat against the table. Whilst creating this piece, I faced many difficulties such as, in order to align all faces, edges, and especially, vertices into a straight edge, it demands exceptional preciseness and patience. The outcome represents a clean, architectural and minimal looking 10 x 10 x 10 inch cube. Looking back now, I can see some minor errors, for instance I could had sanded the glue stains off, but overall, I am happy with the final project.
