Sketches and concepts for Union Square

  1. Public toilets
After taking a better look at Union Square I realised there are no public toilets which is really strange. Union Square is one of the most crowded places in New York and there is not one single public toilet. I want to add mobile toilets for the public to use which can be extremely convenient and accessible especially for the merchants, chess players and homeless people.

  2. Benches and water fountain
Every time I walk across Union Square from the backside, I always think how empty it is compared to the front section. I think adding a water fountain to the restaurant’s place would be a great asset to that site and it can be as popular as the front. I would also add benches around the fountain for people to hang around and it can be a potential meeting point for the public.

  3. Lifts and ramps
Another huge thing I noticed was there were no lifts. Which means the tube is unaccessible for people with disabilities. I think adding lifts throughout the square can save time and be much more convenient and accessible for everyone. Also adding ramps would save time and be less crowded so everyone can reach the tube in time.
