Both writings build thoughts based on past experience and developed critical thoughts reflecting on the particular memories.  The purpose for both texts was to learn from existing forms of literature and then construct own writings that fall in the same genre as the originals. However, Bridge 1 Memoir focused on creative writing that requires a less rigid format than the academic essay written for Bridge 2 Reflection. Different elements are also required for each convention. For the memoir lyric, paragraphs are avoided to achieve certain rhythms. Literary elements such as alliteration are applied to maintain the rhyme. And the overall structure is organized through the use of repetitive sentence pattern – starting each memory with 4 ‘I remember’ and end with 1 or 2 ‘I imagine’. On the contrary, the reflection paper follows pre-established structure designated for academic essays. The paper is organized by 5 paragraphs in total – an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. A thesis statement is also an element required only by the reflection paper but not by the memoir lyric, though which the central idea is explicitly stated before arguments are presented. In comparison, the memoir lyric evokes more emotion response from the readers whereas the reflection paper focused on presenting ideas with facts to readers without asking for a sympathetic connection. The outcomes gained from each writing are different as well. In the memoir lyric, my sole intention is to recall specific memory and express my feelings about these past events through the process of remembering. I do not need to establish reflection on my past experience and rethink how these past events can benefit me in future events. However, I am seeking improvements and self-development in the reflection paper by relating my design process to possible future applications.
