Zine – The Garden of Rock and Zen

Zine: a noncommercial often homemade or online publication usually devoted to specialized and often unconventional subject matter.

—- Merriam-Webster Definition

The purpose of the Zine project is to briefly summarize the findings of the research done in Seminar course and to serve as a thematic check point for the upcoming final project. In respond to my seminar research on Japanese Zen gardens and its social significance as an important meditation space, in my Zine project, I explored the two fundamental components of Japanese Zen gardens – the philosophy of Zen and the material of stones.

To correspond with the number of components, I also structured my Zine into two parts by explicitly labelling a title sheet similar to ‘Part 1 – Zen’ and ‘Part 2 – Stones’ prior to introducing detail information. My first intention was to have my zine resembling the appearance of the Japanese hand scroll, of which pages would be attached one to another. However, as the time requirement for an authentic hand scroll was huge, I had to shift from the original idea of making a scroll and go with design that hopefully create a similar feeling. The whole Zine was printed on 11″ x 17″ Paper. The cover and first page were glued to Bristol paper to increase thickness.
