Studio Lab: muslin study

The project started with a study of muslim from 2 different weights. The intention was to develop one curtain design that must be able to filter light and one decorative design (in 10 x 10 either for throw pillows or for wall coverings) using only muslim. I chose light weight and medium weight muslims as my design materials.

I noticed the light weight muslim being light-transmittable. But when two layers of light weight muslim were applied, it no longer filtered light. I decided to explore this quality in my design, developing the pattern not by cutting from and combining separate fabrics but by folding and layering the one piece of light weight muslim on its own.

The medium weight muslim, on the other hand, gave a smoother touch and a firmer quality to style for decorative purposes. So I decided to create a more contrasting, dynamic form out of the medium weight muslim for the throw pillow. As the light weight muslim slightly more ventilative, I packed light weight muslim with medium weight muslim pieces into elastic muslim balls.

The final deliverables were asked to be made in muslims and or one other white fabric. I used sheer tulle for the final curtain design to further contrast the difference of light transmittance between single-layer and multi-layer design.
