Int Studio: Memories Week 2

My Memories and Dreams

Week 1

These drawing are a daily recording of my day. I don’t have a journal and I don’t like keeping a journal or writing about my day. “Today I did this…, and today I did this…” This seemed so boring to me and it wasn’t fun. But as I was drawing bits and bits, it was fun recording my day visually. So I drew everyday, like a drawing journal. I chose to not color these drawings because I wanted to imply that these memories are in the past as I recorded

Week 1 Presentation

I wanted this artwork to feel like these drawings were randomly put up – like one would do at their personal space – because these drawings are very personal as they are a recording of my day and dreams. So I decided to put the drawings up with tapes with adds up the sense of intimacy.

Critique

"It's like a journal with a lot of people and places. It looks like the artist is drawn to objects. The drawings mostly consist of Black and White. The absence of color was a choice, which gives a certain unity. Maybe the artist should give special treatment to people? Since there are a lot of people in this art work."

Week 2

Week 1 Revision

I decided to add colors to my drawings from week 1. I wanted to emphasize the people in my drawings by coloring only the objects. I don’t necessarily like people. but I like observing strangers as they come and go. So I decided to leave the people colorless to emphasize that aspect in my drawings.

Photographs of Bikes

I recognized myself taking photos of bicycles unconsciously. I don’t know why, but I kept taking photos of bicycles that were on the street. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t able to go to the orientation going to the governor’s island to ride bicycle because of my broken toe. I like riding bicycle, but I haven’t rode it for a couple of years, so I was looking forward to going to that orientation. However, sadly I broke my toe after I signed up for the event…

Drawings

Week 2’s drawings were a combination of my daily observations, thoughts, and drawings from my unconscious state of mind.

Recordings

This is a recording of a band from the Subway. This recording is from September 9th, my birthday. I met up with my friend from high school who goes to Columbia at union square. We took the subway to go to K town to eat Korean food. When we went to Union Square subway station, I saw a band planing songs and recored them. I sort of felt special because it was my birthday and the song sounded like a birthday song, though the song was nothing like the birthday song.

Brainstorming

  1. My first idea was to make a shape of a bicycle wheel with the square photos of bicycle and then surround the shape with my drawings.
  2. My second idea was to make a rectangular grid – the width being longer – with the photos of the bicycle. Then I would surround the rectangle with my drawings forming another rectangle where the height is longer.
  3. My third idea was to make the shape of the legs of a person riding a bike with the photos of my bicycle and then surrounding them with my drawings.
  4. My fourth idea was to make a planet and star with the photos and my drawings.
  5. My fifth idea was to make a traffic light with my photos an drawings. I like taking pictures and drawing traffic lights. I also thought about traffic light because they let things go and stop. This idea was similar to my idea of recording my memories. As I spend my day, I come across numerous events and memories. However, among theses memories, I choose to record only a part of memories that were significant to me. And this was sort of light the traffic light. My mind serve as the traffic light selecting some parts to remain and some parts to go.

Prototypes

Idea 1

Process

This didn’t turn out as I expected. The inconsistent shapes of the drawings were disturbing the image of the bicycle wheel.

Idea 3

Process

This didn’t turn out as I had expected. It didn’t really look like a person’s legs ridding a bike.

Idea 4

Process

My fourth idea was inspired from David Wojnarowicz exhibition from the Whitney Museum. When I was looking at the exhibition I noticed the drawing of Peter Hujar sleeping in numerous art works. This inspired me to create my own universe of memories and dreams that I could always imagine as I would dream in my sleep. So I created a planet and stars to imply that this artwork represents my universe and the circulation of time as the planet would turn around.

Idea 5

Process

I really liked the idea of the traffic light and the meaning it conveyed, but this presentation didn’t look visually appealing to me. So I decided to not go with this idea.

Final Artwork

Final Critique

"There are a lot of drawings and pictures, both big and small. There are more color than before, creating a contrast. There are a lot of details and specific observations. Photos focuses on bicycles from different places. There are also receipts, tickets, and napkins. There are notes on drawings. The coloring of NY cabs looks like it's displaying iconic image of NYC. The artwork shows a lot of moments and activities. The artwork has a symmetrical composition which is interesting. The usage of color creates an emphasis on certain objects, creating emphasis on people. The photographs stand out and creates a contrast with the drawings."
