Polyhedron

The complexity of Life 인생

Objective

Building on from the five regular polyhedrons, the Platonic solids, our objective for this project was to create an irregular polyhedron, whether closed or open, by using different materials to have a structure of its own.

A real example of Polyhedron.

This is an example of a polyhedron that shows the combination of irregular polygons and complex shapes.

Process

Step 1: Making Five Regular Platonic Solids

To understand how combinations of polygons could create a 3D structure, I started out by making five regular polyhedrons with Bristol papers. I recycled misprinted images from my class last semester to add some visual effects to the models.

Step 2: Sketching and Prototyping the Final Polyhedron

After, making regular polyhedrons, I sketched out my design for the irregular polyhedron and based on the sketches I made prototypes using Bristol papers. My initial intention was to use eyelets with vellum tabs to connect each shape, however, the hole was a bit small so it did not work with the model.

Step 3: Process

Based on the prototype, I began to make my final model. I decided to use iridescent acrylic sheets to make my model because I wanted it to look smooth and beautiful on the outside. So I based on my prototype, I edited my ai files and cut the pieces using the laser cutter.

Using the pieces, I experimented with different methods of connecting, such as eyelets, and threads, however, nothing worked better than wires. So using wires, I started connecting the pieces by dividing sections from my prototypes.

I connected the pieces and wires and to form the shape, I connected each string of wires to further structure the shape. However, having no central axis my polyhedron was not able to stand on its own.

So I made a stick using wires to hold the pieces.

Final Structure

I thought I had gotten used to making 3D sculptures going through our previous projects, it is still hard for me to transform my 2D designs into 3D. My original idea consisted irregular polygons to make this irregular shape, however, different from what I had in mind, I was so hard to fit everything in. Eventually, I altered my idea into using regular triangles to create this complex shape. Although the process was extremely hard and there had beens some adjustments from my original idea, the outcome turned out to be very satisfying. I wanted to my sculpture to have a contrast between the beautiful front and the distorted back. Because I wanted to express human nature within this; people may seen beautiful in the outside, inside we are distorted with our pains and worries. So considering this, I am satisfied with my work.
