For my Bridge 2 Mapping a Space project, I decided to make a booklet on Korea Town in 32nd street between 5th ave and the intersection of 6th ave and Broadway. It was interesting to see something Korean could exist in the middle of an unfamiliar city and create a safe haven for those who long for home. So, I focused on the idea of 정-Jeong to see how this complex emotion built up into creating a town.
I visited Korea Town several times, to get the feeling of the space and observe the people. I took some photographs and drew illustrations using Korean traditional artistic style.
I wanted the design to resemble the Korean traditional book, so I designed them to be read from left to right. And because I wanted to image transfer everything, I wrote my essay before creating the layout. First, I designed the layout on InDesign and then printed them on procolor to image transfer. I transferred the images on a Korean Traditional paper called Jang-ji using citra solv and blender markers. In addition to image transfer, I also printed on vellum to create a feeling of movement.
I had a book binding kit from last year, so I used a waxed to do stab binding from my booklet.
I tried to make a wooden chest to store to book, however, my attempt failed as my wood broke.
Instead of making a wooden chest, I decided to make a cloth that wrapped the book. This cloth was traditionally used from the past, and I thought this correlated better with what I was aiming to do for my book.
The overall process for making this book was extremely fun as I love making books and researching on my country’s history. I passed through Korea Town without knowing anything about it, but this project allowed me to understand more about the place and the significance it was to our people. As a continuation from this project, I want to keep making books on Korea’s history and maybe create a collection of booklets.
