Stedelijk Museum composite patchwork

Research and concept

  • I began this project with an interest in repurposing and combining materials, and its relevance within technology, digital art, media, and textile processes like quilting and weaving:
  • Dina Kelberman’s ongoing project I’m Google, where she takes thousands of images from Google and creates a seamless sequence you can scroll through. To me this brings in an interesting curiosity: one can assume that she used code or some sort of automated bot to post the images like this, but it is all done manually! For thousands of images! I find that her allowing such maddening repetition in her process is fascinating.

The concept of Patchwork or “pieced work”

Composite construction ‘exists when two different materials are bound together so strongly that they act together as a single unit’

composite material – ‘when combined, produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components’
