In Studio, I’ve been exploring my topic: Hyphenated American identity through multiple diptychs. I focused more on the personal aspects of it. I’ve been experimenting with different mediums such as acrylic and collage.
Final Project Proposal – For my final project, I want to create a clothing piece that would represent both my Korean and American identity. Through the diptychs in Studio, I’ve briefly researched the different clothes and representations of the two cultures. I want to include letters and flowers.

Meeting with Byran and Eric allowed me to clear up my idea a little bit and helped me guide how and what I need to research for this project.
My updated Studio Project Proposal is turning something very symbolic of America and appropriating them into Korean culture. For instance, taking an American flag and composing the red stripes out of Korean red flowers. The object would then become a symbol of the struggles of hyphenated American identity which would be written in Seminar class.
What I need to research by our next class are the materials that I will be exploring in. I also need to research the artist Johanna Jackson and her works and interview other Asian-Americans, more specifically Korean-American, about their experiences.
Kkhushi had written that I should continue on with my idea of making a garment with aspects from both cultures. Ilse had written that I should focus on my personal experiences and have them influence my work.
Update:
I’ve set my idea of making a garment. During the critique, Jin advised me to print on the fabric through the plotter printer, and Danielle had told me to incorporate handwriting into the fabric.
