Final Project IS2 – Visual Culture

My final project is going to be about Hybrid identity as an immigrant. I will be focusing on the personal experiences of my hyphenated-American friends that deal with the struggles finding identity in where they feel estrangement.

Final prototype

For the materials, I want to use sheer fabric to mimic the hanbok texture and color. The handwriting will be printed on to the fabric in the design lab and then made into a garment.

In Seminar, I will be writing about the struggles of finding self-identity in the midst of estrangement. My Studio final connects with my writing since the writings on the fabric will be the struggles of immigrants.

What I heard in critique was for me to print on the fabric through the plotter printer, and Danielle had told me to incorporate handwriting into the fabric. Danielle had also advised me to make others actually hand write on the fabric in order for it to be even more personal. This advice was helpful because I was lost on how to get the writings on to the fabric but Jin and Danielle helped me figure out how to make my idea successfully work.

Since last week I’ve been looking at archives from Chan Hyo Bae’s portfolio and The Kyoto Costume Institute to help me get inspirations for the design and materials of the garment.

For the next class, I will try to collect interviews and handwritings from other hyphenated Americans as much as I can. (throughout the weekend) I will also explore different materials and collect the fabric. (1 hour)

On April 29, I had told Bryan the different plans I had if the printing on fabric did not turn out to be successful. One of the plans is having the handwritings printed on a sticker which will then be attached to the fabric. Bryan had told me it would be best to go ahead and start printing on the fabric which should be brought to class for feedback.

  1. For the next class, I plan on purchasing fabric – 1hr
  2. I will gather interviews and scan – throughout the week
  3. I will print the writings on to the fabric – 20min
