Through Studio and Seminar, I’ve learned the importance of the visuals in our culture and how much the way we see things can affect the way we think. Every visual aspect is chosen with specific purposes, and therefore, we must carefully choose to display things for specific reasons.

Studio was an opportunity for me to really explore through different materials and mediums in creating art and to view art in a broader perspective. I learned to move from 2D art to 3D art, combining both digital and tactile techniques. In Seminar, I learned the way icons, symbols, and index can signify things in different ways. I was able to really incorporate these three signifiers into my final studio garment, through the colors, textures, cones, and ruffles.

For my final project, the whole process was a challenge for me, because I’ve never been able to make a garment before. I didn’t know where to start and what materials to even buy. This probably took the most time for me because I was so lost in the beginning. I decided that I needed to just get started with it, and I’m overall glad that I was able to construct a garment. However, there are some parts that I wish I would have improved on. For instance, the overall craftsmanship could have been better and the edges of the fabrics could have been cleaner. If my sewing skills had been better, I would have definitely spent more time on this part. Nevertheless, I am satisfied that I was able to make a garment, especially the cones and the ruffles around them. They conveyed my message of hyphenated-American really well.

If given more time for the making of the garment, there would definitely be more cones extending from the skirt. It would be interesting to see if the rows of cones drag down from the skirt, sweeping the floor from side to side. In addition, there would be more exploration of different materials. A more in-depth and wider spectrum of textures and colors and their signifiers would also be researched. The display of the writings would also be explored, such as in the form of tattoos.
