Week 4 Demo B: Basic Automata Mechanisms

Materials: cardboard, utility knife, ruler, tape, pen, chopsticks(not pictured)

prepared 2 sides(3.5in by 4in) and bottom and top(3.5in by 3in)

poked a hole in the middle of both of the side cardboards and the top cardboard

created three disks of the same size and poked a hole in two of them

attached the cardboards to create a box with opening(ignore the chopstick sticking out)

roll up tape loosely and attach it where the hole is on the top cardboard piece. This functions to control the movement of the chopstick. Allows the chopstick to move up and down and prevents it from moving side to side

insert a shorter chopstick inside the loosely rolled up tape attached on top

put the chopstick inside the holes on the side cardboard. Make sure to stick two disks on the chopstick between the two side cardboard

attach the character on the shorter chopstick

Final Outcome. For this project, I wanted to work with the up and down movement. I felt that choosing this character makes sense to the movement, because he is characterized as playful and full of energy. I imagine this character to be always moving and constantly hopping up and down.   At first, I only had one disk in the middle and I realized that the movement wasn’t stable enough. In order to create balance and stability, I added the second disk which solved the problem. Overall, I appreciate how I could make this project with materials that are easy to find and get. At first, I wasn’t sure if chopsticks were going to work since the sticks that were shown in the demo were much thinner, but I am really glad that it worked nevertheless.
