Project Proposal

For Spring Core 3D project, I would like to work on a character that i had designed in the past. I want to develop further with the story of the character and work with the theme of finding beauty in ugly, familiarity in distant. My two projects are going to be incorporate with the character design itself and the background design. This character is going to be like a “children’s book” but for adults.

Project 1 Character

Mechanism Considerations

The Automata Blog: Wooden camel toy driven by a cam mechanismWIND-UP MOTOR VEHICLE

I want to create a 3D sculpture of this character. The height of it is going to be around 12in. On the body part, there are going to be numerous human legs and arms attached that can be rotated and played around by the viewer. The viewer’s experience with the sculpture is a crucial part of the character. The legs and arms can be pulled out a little, but not entirely. The sculpture can be acted as a toy.

Materials: I want the character to be made with both soft and hard materials, consisting of multiple textures. Fabrics, Clay, Cotton, Legs and Arms:Found objects(doll parts) painted and hair added. silicon dip. felted wool or foam for body. found objects for cannibalistic feeling

I will spend the first half of the 7 weeks on this part(3~3.5 weeks). I will start with the head and work with its body. I would have to make sure I spend the most time working with the body part because the mechanism with the legs and arms are going to take the longest.

I will name the character at the end of the process.

Project 2 Background

I want to create a 3D background of the environment(the woods) that the character lives in. I want to create the entire thing in white to create contrast with the colorful character and to evoke an eerie and creepy mood. For materials, I’m thinking of going entirely with white clay for the details and white boards for foundation. I will spend about 3 weeks on this part which would leave me about a week to review the two projects and work on anything I might have missed or need to add.
