Webtoon

After the economic crisis that hit South Korea in the late 90s, comic publishers were forced to shut down. Due to this, people sought a new way to show comics, resulting in the shift to digital comics. The biggest difference from the original comics was that it was one long vertical scroll. The first Webtoon was launched on Daum website in 2003 followed by Webtoon on Naver launched in 2004. It opened a whole new platform for people to easily access comics. It became very popularized not only in Korea but also globally.

Scroll painting in East Asia

Scroll paintings were practiced primarily in East Asia. The earliest form dates back to the 4th century in China. The main role of it was to teach Buddhist moral lessons.

Emaki-mono

For thousands of years, Japan used narrative scrolls called emaki-mono to record history and to share stories. It contains both text and images to tell story.
