class notes:

week one:

Figure drawing:

For the past two weeks, we have been practising, observing and learning how to draw the human figure correctly. Learning to see the lines and the shadows amoungst the body were key focus points for these classes. Below are some of the images which I have taken of my work in class and, out of class. The mediums used consisted of pencil, charcoal and ink. Each either on their own or used together to create a portrait.

Week one: the lady.

pencil:

These are some of the very first sketched I did in class using a pencil.

charcoal:

After getting used to pencil and how to draw the body we proceeded to move onto charcoal, I quite liked using charcoal, I have never used it in a way like this before. The last drawing seen in this series was by covering the whole canvas in black and then erasing the lines we saw. I liked how different this method was however I do remember finding it to be quite challenging trying to get my brain to think backwards, by converting the colours.

Homework from week one:

a self-portrait out of charcoal on A3 paper.

Week Two: the man.

charcoal:

for this class like the last, we started with charcoal, outlining the lines and movement we saw, slowly moving onto the shadows and trying to get them to be as soft as possible, which I believe you can see that tried to do so.

Ink:

after charcoal, we moved on and upgraded to ink. ink is fun. a bit messy and can be annoying to work with but I find that working with the brush to create lines and movement is much easier and relaxed. I personally don’t quite like these pieces I did, I find that the body proportions aren’t very proportionate and that he looks quite awkward, which is something I look forward to improving on. I chose to include them for I liked where I was going with the lines and shadows on the body.

overall I really liked these class lessons, at first I was scared for I have never done figure drawing or used materials such as charcoal and ink, but id like to think that I have made some progress and improvement along the way.
