The Assignment,

This week during our class we went and visited the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) where we then had to select an object and find a way to remake/ repurpose it while trying to relate it to one of our ideas for our major work.

My Object,

when I first saw my object, I walked right past it and didn’t even recognise what it was, for it was just a mirror. It wasn’t until I walked past it and saw it was a mirror, but as I was walking, I then realised that I could see everything but myself.

I have no clue what kind of magic this mirror possesses or how it works, but I can’t wait to learn more about it and what it is / the meaning behind it.

The main concept of the mirror is that unlike a normal mirror when you get closer, your reflecting becomes clearer, this mirror does the opposite making everything foggy and ghostly all while still having the surroundings in focus.

Ideas for my Object
Relate it to fire
  • Fog
  • Smoke
  • Ash
  • Not being able to see clearly

Self-reflection

  • not being able to see what you look like
  • self-identity
  • narcissism

Vision

  • not being able to see what you want
  • out of focus
  • blurry vision
  • thing seeming normal from a distance

Reverse my object into an experience/installation. Create a room filled with smoke/fog by using a fog machine and have people wandering around inside. Compare it to my selected art piece in the ways of which when objects/people get closer they become more and more unrecognisable and fade into nothingness, whereas when people come closer in my smoke and approach each other, they will come clearer.

Using this experience link it to my major in the event of the fires and what the smoke was like back home. How to some degree it was exactlly what it was like every day, everywhere, wherever you went.

Process,

using the fog machine,

setting it up,

watching the gradual change,

As you can see from the images and video, the overall experience and sensation were very ghostly, just like the mirror. If not, I feel like my fog is more so, for I think that it looks like floating souls lingering around the classroom. But not in a scary way more of a  soft and beautiful way.

documentation with friends,

to ensure that it would be safe and clear up, I opened all the windows and used a piece of cardboard as I walked around the room trying to circulate the air. within a matter of minutes, it was all gone like it was never there. – much so like how it was back home, within seconds it would go from a clear blue sky to dark grey ash.

How can I move on into my final work?

I am so thankful that the museum had this mirror for without it, I don’t think I would have come up with the idea that I have for my final. As of right now I am visioning an installation where I would use the fog, maybe to a lesser degree and have the scenery as the main focus. Trying to truly capture what the fires were like and what my experience was like back home. I would also somehow like to create an orange tinge on the lights to make the sky and surrounding a dark blood orange like it was back home.

I’m stilling thinking and. Figuring out as to how I can make this experience realistic. Another detail that I would like to do to tie it all together would be to get paper the height of the walls and draw/paint a scenery of burnt trees and wildlife all over the classroom to truly in capture and incorporate the overall scenery experience of what our day to day life was like. That way, you can get a sense and understanding of what it was like for us all.

what did my classmates think?

the overall reaction was exactly what I was hoping for which made me so so happy. it was also perfect because in our seminar class we were talking about our possible research directions and I showed an image of what it was like back home and everyone seemed quite shocked but then when I was able to put them in the room with all the smoke and I said that this was what it felt like it was rather silent.

when I showed them my mirror and the original object many seemed to be quite impressed that I was able to find an object and link it in such a way so that was very nice. overall I really liked my object remake and think that the link to my direction was perfect and that I delivered the message I wanted across.
