PART ONE

Create five finished drawings on the theme of identity territories. The finished work should represent at least 6-hours of drawings. Medium, application technique and format are open.

After completing my three sketches on identity, I decided that I would like to blend and combine two of my drawings together to make five different drawings. Those two drawings being my map sketches and my fingerprints. Combine them in a way where my fingerprint marks would become the streets I’ve waked on throughout my life. I figured that the similar lines and patterns of a map could easily transition onto a fingerprint because we had to make a five-part series. I chose to select the five locations that mean the most to me and my lifetime.

THE PROCESS

the overall process for this assignment took longer than I thought it would have. I first had to scan my five fingerprints and upload them into photoshop, where I then googled the five addresses and cut them to fit into each print outline. It’s been over a year since I have used photoshop, so having to relearn all the basic steps was quite a process. Once I had completed all five, I had uploaded each image into a word document, where I then proceeded to crop them to the size I had desired, and print them.

Now that I had all five printed, I got my paper, traced over the lines, then retraced over again in a nice felt tip marker. Tracing over all the lines was a steady and slow process. Thankfully I was able to carry my drawings with me and do them just about anywhere. I worked in a preschool and did a few while sitting outside with some of my preschool students while they drew. This was actually a lovely and unique feeling, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and my girls loved watching me draw so many ‘perfect’ lines.

After I had completed my five, I places them all lined up on my wall and photographed them together. I think that if I were to correctly display this I might have them framed to hanging by a string? for now, and for the equipment I have, I think it’s a sweet and simple look with them pressed on the wall of my bedroom.

THE FIVE

2060

McMahons Point Sydney

this is where I was born. This apartment building is where my life started. I have no memory of living here, but I have heard of the many stories. Although I will have two locations based in Australia, I figured it was essential to include my first home. Sydney is a special city for my small family.

94611

Piedmont avenue Oakland, CA

This location is where my aunt, uncle and cousins live. I have spent many summer holidays at this house and even lived there for a few months while I went to school in the states. the memories I have at this house are like no other. This house was always full of life and fun times. When I think of this location, I think of the warm sun on my back, the comfort of my family and the safety I felt while living there.

2615

Belconnen, Canberra

2615, is my current location, ha been for over 11 years now. This house is my roots; although I don’t call this house my childhood home, it still holds many significant times.

307947

Newton road Singapore

Singapore, when I was 12, I discovered Singapore. I had no knowledge that this place had even exist before going for the first time. This is where my dad lives. Singapore at times feels more like home than Australia does. (not very often but often enough) I grew up and had a separate life when the plane landed in Singapore. Travelling alone to a country at such a young age forces you to grow up and become independent fast. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but the more I reflect, it was probably a sight to see a young caucasian girl just wandering all over this city alone. Each time I went, I became more and more familiar with my surroundings and myself. Singapore helped me become the person I am today; without it, I may not have moved to Paris.

75002

Passage Choiseul

my apartment, the start of my life. This apartment holds and forever will have so much love. It’s been almost a year since I last stepped foot, and looking at the map made my heart melt. Every location brings me a sensation, an emotion, a feeling, a connection. 75002 hits me with an overwhelming amount of emotions. When I look at this map, I feel my heart sink, longing to return but scared to go back. So excited to live my life again and be at school, see friends. But so sad to leave home, leave my partner, family and work. Paris changed me as a person; it turned me into an adult. Living alone, far away from home in a foreign country is a big thing. I was forced to grow up and be the boss.

PART TWO

Create two finished drawings on the theme of physical territories. These territories should be shared territories rather than only personal ones. Use the images and inspirations from the presentation in class to guide your approach. The finished work should represent at least 6-hours of drawings. Medium, application technique and format are open.

For the following part of this assignment, we had to remake/ recreate our original five drawings into two the are focused on physical territories. My original five were quite heavily based on a location/ territory; therefore, I decided to change it but still flow on a similar path. When thinking about what I should do for my two drawings, I saw a vision of two of my maps blending into one. I did some rough sketches in my notebook then planned away. I chose to use Canberra, and pairs for these two locations share the place I call home. Due to being in lockdown, I am left with somewhat random assortments of materials, making it hard to explore different mediums. I was planning on drawing on paper or the lucky 2m blank canvas I have lying around. However, the pracaticlitality wasn’t the best. In the end, I resulted in using procreate / my iPad. By choosing this decision, I focused more on my drawing and took it with me wherever I went. When I had planned my sketch, I was worried that I would fly through it and finish it in a few hours, not meeting the 6-hour minimum. Do I now look back and wish I did? Aha. This drawing took hours. Every line, curve, erase, flick. I had drawn. Every street, turn, lake, park, house. I had drawn. Although it was a slow process looking at the final result makes me so happy.

my thoughts

Overall I thought that this assignment was quite fun. Exploring different techniques and using many different mediums to get to my final was quite the process. I am very proud of myself and of the three art parts I have created. I hope that my classmates enjoy my piece.
