The Assignment

After seeing the presentation of images and inspirations, sketch out initial ideas for an open project that conveys thoughts, feelings of ‘being’ or emotion, or is conceptually based. The goal is to communicate a thought or thoughts; this is drawing for communication. This can be a collaborative work.

Ideas

draw my dreams for a certain time e.g a week – use this as a daily relaxing mindfulness time.

ask a class – school kids. – to draw

Kinetic Drawing/ Drawing Machines – dance and have ink? paint? on feet/shoes.

carry a sketch book with me – include any doodles, notes, ideas with the time and date. reason for the drawing if any

Dream Journal

Inspiration: Max’s dream journal from Shark boy and Lava girl.

inspired by Max’s dream journal from Shark boy and Lave girl. I was drawn to the concept of children’s drawings and dreams. I originally was thinking that I would draw my dreams. However I soon realised that I struggle to remember my dreams. I then thought of the possibility of organising a class session at school (where I work). This lesson I would instruct the kids to draw their dreams. I always find my self in a happy place of curiosity and wonder when watching the kids create.

Written proposal to my colleagues,

proposal

Dear Mel, Sarah, Jack and Taylor

I am writing to you all as I have a new assignment at University and I am wondering if I could use your students to be a part of it.

My Assignment’s Guidelines:

Project 3 Drawing Thoughts/ Open Project

This project encompasses ‘territories’ of the mind including metaphysical and mental maps, drawing as a tool for philosophical exploration (Bruno Latour), embodied cognition (graphology/psychology), drawing therapy, diagrammatic and “written drawings”, children and drawing, drawing and the brain (organization, expression of dreams, notions of time), scientific and data visualization, and crime maps (Forensic Architecture).

After seeing the presentation of images and inspirations, sketch out initial ideas for an open project that conveys thoughts, feelings of ‘being’ or emotion, or is conceptually based. The goal is to communicate a thought or thoughts; this is drawing for communication. This can be a collaborative work.

As you may have noticed there is a mention of children and their drawing. When reading this I felt an instant connection to wanting to base my project through children’s art. Since I am also in connection with students at school, I thought this would be a great opportunity to go through with this concept.

The Concept

My plan is to give each student a nice blank piece of paper and ask them to draw out a scene from a dream they had – this will help bridge the connection to ‘mental maps’ and ‘emotions’. The students can use pencils, textas, or any crayon-like medium.

If they cannot remember a dream which they have had. They can draw a dream they wish to have in the future.

I am aware that some students are different and more ‘edgy’ in this grade, so if they wish they can opt out of the dream and draw a nightmare instead.

The Proposal

My proposal is if a block of time could be reserved, perhaps the last 45 minutes of the day 2:15-3:00pm? I believe that this would be a suitable time for the students to ‘calm down’ and relax at the end of the day. I will be sure to leave you each with an organised pack enclosed with enough sheets of paper and instructions to inform the students. Or, would you like me to lead this and explain it to the students?

After completing the work, please place all the work back into the pack and either submit the papers to myself or Ms Clewer depending on the day.

I really appreciate your support with this activity. I’m looking forward to working with the students’ artworks. If you have any advice or suggestions, I’d love to hear them please!

Kindly, Holli

packs that were given to each teacher

Ideas to Display

using a box to present – like a teacher tray Ms Mulacek

having my own interpretation?

just display their work – organise their dreams

create a book

just enough work to leave the kids drawing as they are.

scribble work on top of the art

put in box

the Final

when trying to visualise a final display. I would have loved to have be able to bind all the drawings together with a beautiful hand made fabric cover. I have done this in the past and the outcome was lovely. however being at home I am rather limited to the materials and creative possibilities. Therefore I made a rough idea of the book. I still may try and bind this book at home. The more I think about it the more I feel I may actually be able to pull it off.

In the end i found this to be such a fun final assignment. looking back at all my assignments my personal favourite would be the map I made where I blended my home town with Paris. I am proud of all my assignments I have completed this semester, and look forward to hopefully more drawing based classes. Drawing Concepts has most certainly been a favourite class of mine.
