To design a book which displayed time and the change of time.
Ideas
top two as of right now
Musee d’Orsay Clock: black and white time-lapse like shots through the clock window. classic, timeless sensations
hairdresser: the time it takes to grow your hair vs just quickly it can all go and the process in which it changes. images of hair falling, piles of hair on the ground ect
others,
wasting time: things we do to waste time / avoid wasting time
Metro: either one metro station or multiple and document the rush / non-rush hours
Death: flowers dying, food rotting
Melting: Icecream melting down someone’s hand and the mess it makes / puddle created
Eating: the process of one eating a meal / cooking a meal
Book Research
For myself to get inspired and creative, I went and visited a couple of different arty book shops in le Marais to take some ideas and inspiration form some of their books. I’m pleased that I did this for I was able to see so many different ways a book can be presented. As you can see below, I took some notes down for things which I will be considering for my book/ just thought were different.
representation:
- long horizon format book
- flipbook
- transparent paper
- thread bonded
Different materials, textures and cut-outs on covers
Transparent paper/ layering
Size and Paper Layout
Other details, coloured edges, sticker sheets and thread-bound books
Cameras
I think that for this assignment, I will be using my DSLR for not only do I have that complete sense of control in the image and the outcome, but it will be much more effective for the images which I aspire to produce. I do want to try out some pinhole shots for I think that it could be exciting, but there is also the uncertainty on if it will work or not. Also, if I decide to do a flipbook, it’s going to be rather hard to get enough images.
Testing
for this, I used InDesign to layout a page of images which I then printed, cut out and stapled.
And it worked!
Now I have to do the same with the other 150 images…
Making My Book

The final,
Criticism From the First Tester:
Make it bigger! add more space on the top so the images aren’t cut off. Make the top section black instead of white to blend it in more.
A second test for final,
by using the same layout that I had I was able to change the first one but using an A3 sized paper and adding a centimetre to the top. Also making the top section black instead of white.
PDF of Indesign file,
*due to the number of images the file is too large, currently trying to find a way to compress it down
Making the Final,
I took my second tester, and instead of having it straight black, I changed my final to a darker grey that flowed much nicer and was less sharp and distinctive as the black. I also doubled every image, and I think that this was an excellent idea for it allows the story to flow much nicer.

The “Final”
I say “Final” for this is not my actual final. Although this was what I presented in the class knew that this was not going to be my final book for I wasn’t confident about it and for me, I know that my work is done when I am proud and confident in sharing it with others. I had realised that I wanted to change the cover and the finishing tape; however, I was not quite sure as to how. It wasn’t until. I was in the class that I had decided that I would like a black cover with typed text and a ribbon finish. I had a vision in my head, and I loved it.
As soon as the class had finished, I went down to the tech lab, remade the cover and went and found some fabric tape. I then went home, fixed it up and completed my final. I am pleased that I decided to do this change, for I believe that it had entirely upgraded the quality and appearance of a book and goes from being a class project to an actual book. Not only that, but I am confined and proud of the work that I created, and that is what’s most important to me. Looking at it now and this change makes me so much happier, and I can’t wait to now show my classmate my changes, I hope that they too agree with my new 2.0 edition.

Personal Reflection,
I enjoyed this assignment, at first, I was a little suck with all of my ideas as my classmates saw yet I think in the end I was able to pull through and present a book that matched the assignment’s criteria. I believe that in an assignment like this, you can see all my improvements and the process which I went through each week to get to my final result.
Overall I love my book and find it to be somewhat timeless 😉 I also think that my images are soft and calm yet strong and fast.
Class Feedback,
In the end, the feedback which I had received was rather positive, which is always lovely, for the most part, it consisted of clean images, strong concept and how simple yet profession it is.
I also had some significant constructive criticism which I find to be much more appreciated. They consisted of the parts which I had known that I wanted to change such as, cleaning up the tape and glue to make it cleaner. I believe that for the most part, I considered this when creating my updated 2.0 version.
Answers to questions:
Did people stare?
Yes, however, I think it was more so out of curiosity. Although I know that if I had seen some strange girl standing in the middle of the walkway with a big camera, making heaps of clicking noises for each image I know that I too would stare for a second. Luckily I have leant to develop confidence for situations like this, so I wasn’t all that uncomfortable. Besides that, as you can see in my flipbook, the people weren’t staying for too long and passed by quite quickly.
Why did you choose two minutes?
As I explained in class, I was standing in the museum for just over an hour taking over a thousand images of different possible scenes until I found one that I liked, which just so happened to be the scene from 15:16-15:18 which was two minutes.
Choice of Black and white?
My first few images were taken in colour, but I felt that it wasn’t right, I then changed my camera settings a few times testing things out and then played with a black and white filter. I then knew that this was it. By having the images B&W I believe that it brings the pictures to life and takes away the distractions of all the colours allowing us to focus on the people, their movement, the clock.
A suggestion that I quite liked and would defiantly take into consideration, If I were to continue broadening this assignment, would be to make a series of different museums. I quite like this for I could see it being quite interesting as to what museums I would go to and what part of it would I want to capture.
