My project explores the concept of growth and regeneration within nature, taking apart organic objects to create new images, shapes, and forms. Plants such as flowers appear to be a unified object, but are actually composed of many smaller parts that come together to transform and regenerate into one, full creation. I took apart or “dissected” these flowers piece by piece, then regenerated them once more into a new shape – the symbolic image of the butterfly, itself a symbol of regeneration and transformation. I created a series of photo triptychs showing the flower, the flower broken up, and finally, butterflies formed from the separated parts of the flower, a representation of nature’s constant cycle and how the death of one thing can help create another life.
