This partial map of Manhattan was inspired by a style of writing employed in Virginia Woolf’s novel “Mrs. Dalloway,” which she refers to as the “stream of consciousness.” To create this map, I traced over a map of Manhattan, but instead of depicting the city, I depicted my “stream of consciousness” for the various neighborhoods in New York, including memories, emotions, important places, or plans for what I would like to do there someday. I also used specific colors (as well as writing/font style) that I associate with each area or that the area reminded me of, another reflection of my mental processes about these various districts and neighborhood. Overall, this map was an ordinary map of Manhattan turned into a personal reflection of the times I have spent in new York, and the way the city has left an imprint on my own mind.
