Bridge 3 Part 2

As the final project, Sale will be a series of artworks displayed in MoMa PS1. Derived from the idea of reification of women, these pieces are meant to depict how some females are oppressed and seen as merchandise, or merely baby-making machine. It is unfortunate that such objectification of women is a common phenomenon in especially Asian society. Every woman is expected to have at least one child; otherwise, she will be the victim of gossip, pressure, and disdain. Even my mom, who is a well-educated woman, told me that a woman’s life is not complete without bearing a child. This conservative thought shackles many women to despair. It even leads to the human trafficking of young girls, who are forced to marry a strange man and have babies.

Inspired by Karine Jollet, whose anatomical sculptures are pristine, soft, but disturbing in a sense, I would like to explore a variety of materials for this project. In addition to painting, which is what I have done mostly so far, I am interested in doing two fabric sculptures since it links between craft and fine art. In all three pieces, the protagonists are the victim of objectification. One of them will be locked in a soft cage made of cotton, the other will have a floor plan painted on her belly, and the last one will have a doll her eviscerated torso.

For my next step, I will try to build some basic fabric sculptures in order to get familiar with this material. I will also examine deeper about how feminism is expressed through art.
