Drawing through the Making Centre: Project 3 Built Metropolis

Although I do not have a religious belief, I am interested in the architecture style of churches. This was the first time I tried to work with clay, but the structure of churches was usually very sophisticated. Therefore, I found a relatively simple church in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. Being a Roman Catholic parish church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, it is the oldest existing church in Harlem and above 44th Street in Manhattan.

I first drew a simplified version as my concept sketch.

I started with the front of the church. Because I liked how some churches had two towers that were symmetrical, I decided to add in another tower.

The clay was too dry after the spring break. Unfortunately, I could not control the moisture well and sprayed too much water on it. So after I finished the other sides of the church, it had the tendency to lean toward the back. If I had more time, I would have dried it more and finalized the details by smoothening the surfaces. But I liked the organic feeling it had.
