HOSPICE CARE FACILITIES_PHASE 2: Concept, Inspiration & Schematic Design

INSPIRATION

As a hospice facility, one can argue that destination is the one of the most crucial ingredients in hospice care. In modern culture, most of the hospice facilities are considered to be the dreadful places,  where one can run to ease the pain and complexity of inevitable impending death.

ABSTRACT CONCEPT MODEL

Function: To ease the mind in a space where undulating forms and textures of the walls and windows resemble the blue waters.

The ocean has a calming magical effect affecting both the mind and body. Stress is both a cause and  enemy to many ailments. Creating a soothing ambience is essential to all patients and the elderly.

The ocean with its vast deep blue waters gives a sense of serenity and tranquility. Its mysterious underworld and its seemingly endless waves and boundaries can provoke a sense of calm curiosity and creative imaginations. Imagining sceneries such as the glimmering sunlight on the  waters bring about feelings of celestial peace and harmony.

Being around nature is the best environment for all people especially the sick. If not being in contact with  nature, an environment that reminds one of nature  can still be effective in creating a meditative, relaxed state of mind and connectedness to nature.

Color is one of the languages of the soul, they influence one’s mood and emotions.  The color is obviously influence by personality.  colors affect our way of perception that light colors make a space look big, dark colors narrows space.  Colors tell something about biological attraction.

According to Dr. Edwin Babbit in his “The Principles of Light and Color”, the color blue is “one of the greatest antiseptics in the world.” For instance it cools down inflammation, fever, high blood pressure, calms strong emotions like anger, hysteria, and aggression. It also soothes suffering, and is used for ailments associated with speech among  many others.

A healing space with celestial lighting filtered through sea washed glasses and plastic panels or windows.

The patients, nurses, doctors, and visitors can experience the mysterious stillness of celestial lighting in their journey in the hospice.
