Questions for 2 diptychs and LP post for bridge II

  • What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

I used same materials with different composition in this diptych. I experimented with different compositions to see how the composition and the materials create different meanings and impressions.

  • How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

Gold leaf gilding made very interesting textures. Because all the materials are covered with gold colors, the materiality of the objects are more highlighted and also it makes it harder to recognize what the material is.

  • How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

Gold leaf gilding changed the impression of my objects. My objects are trash and wrapping paper, but the gold colors and textures weaken the impression that they are trash.

  • What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

I learned that gold leaf gilding can create various textures and change the impression of the objects.

  • How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

The gold colors signify something that is valuable and indestructible which is completely different from the materiality of wrapping paper that is made to be disposable and ephemeral. There is an irony between these two materialities.

  • What websites / books / museums / galleries / other artists did you research during this process for ideas and inspiration?

I researched my inspiration on Museum of Modern Art and the book Art Since 1900. I researched on artists that use readymade and works that are about economy such as Jasper Johns and John Knight.

  • What conversation happened between each image in this diptych?

Similarly with the first diptych, I experimented with different compositions using similar materials.

  • How was the medium selected successful at supporting the content of your object, form, or image? (if it was not as successful as others, why?)

The brown paper bag I used for the background make this diptych more finished, it gives more contrast between the objects and the background.

  • How did the materiality (medium used) affect the content or meaning of the individual artworks?

The medium I used which are wrapping paper and tapes indicate that the artwork is about commodities and consumerism. The materials I used are found objects and they are also mass produced objects.

  • What did you learn about your content through this medium exploration?

I realized that acrylic paint works for the composition, but also it connects other materials I used.

  • How did the medium you used change the context of your object, form, or image?

By putting the objects on a flat surface and painting them, it deconstructs the original context of my object which is to protect the object inside the wrapping paper and attract people  to buy it.

  • What websites / books / museums / galleries / other artists did you research during this process for ideas and inspiration?

I researched Sterling Ruby who makes collage with found materials on cardboard. His simple but strong composition of his collages was my inspiration for this diptych.

Regarding the whole process:

  • How does this experiment shift your overall thesis question?

I learned that gold leaf gilding is very interesting way to change the content and the context of the objects which is what I wanted to achieve through this artwork. Also, all five diptychs are made through similar process, but it was interesting to see how each diptych have various impressions.
